Update on WSCUC Accreditation Reaffirmation

TO: Campus Community
FR: Stacey J. Bosick, Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Campus Community,

Thank you once again for your ongoing engagement in our accreditation reaffirmation process with the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). President Spagna, AVP Jenn Lillig, and I met with the Commission during the final panel review on February 12, 2026, and the Commission’s letter is now available.

The Commission commended Sonoma State on our “appointment of a seasoned, engaged, and forward-thinking president.” This reflects the leadership and stability that are essential to our continued progress.

As we acknowledged in our 2024 Institutional Report and discussed with WSCUC during its team visit in September, the university has faced financial challenges and leadership transitions in recent years. These realities present an important opportunity to clarify our institutional identity, strengthen enrollment, and enhance transparency in shared governance.

Consistent with our self assessment, the Commission has issued a Notice of Concern. This is not a sanction, and the university continues to meet accreditation standards. The Commission is delaying further action, which provides the university the opportunity to demonstrate sustained progress and measurable improvement under President Spagna’s leadership.

We will welcome a special visit from WSCUC in March 2027 and will work together over the coming year to prepare for that review.
