Suspected explosive device (Case #SS26-20)

The Sonoma State University Police Department is seeking community assistance with information about a suspected explosive device that was discovered at 5:45 p.m. today at the northwest section of the Lakes.

Officers were alerted to the suspected device by a community member who was magnet fishing at the Lakes. The community member contacted the University Police Department, which immediately isolated the area and began an investigation. 

Based on an officer’s observations, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called to assist. A bomb squad detective collected the device to render it safe at an off-campus facility. 

At no time was the community in imminent danger.

  • Immediately and promptly report any suspected crime, suspicious persons, or activities on campus to University Police by calling or texting 911 or the non-emergency line at 707-664-4444.
  • If you believe that you or someone else is in an unsafe situation, please do not delay calling or texting 911 or seeking assistance from others.
  • Be alert to your surroundings. Your actions as an active bystander can help prevent crimes from occurring within our campus community.
