Dear Campus Community,
Today, Sonoma State University joins communities across the nation in celebrating Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring the histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American and Indigenous peoples.
Sonoma State University is situated on the ancestral lands of the Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok peoples, who are today represented by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria. We acknowledge their deep connection to these lands and their ongoing presence and stewardship.
This day also invites us to reflect on the lasting impacts of colonization and displacement while celebrating the resilience and strength of Indigenous communities.
At Sonoma State, the Office of Tribal Relations works to build relationships with Tribal Nations, facilitate meaningful consultation, and fulfill the University's responsibilities under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). These efforts demonstrate our commitment to Tribal sovereignty, cultural heritage, and Indigenous knowledge.
We encourage our campus community to move beyond acknowledgment and take meaningful action. Join us for the Native American Student Success Symposium on November 17 to build connections and explore ways to support Native student success. Additional resources and opportunities for engagement are available on the University's Indigenous Peoples’ Day webpage.
