A Message from the President

Friday, March 27, 2026, 5:01pm

Dear Campus Community,

It is with a heavy heart and a profound sense of loss for our community that I write to share the heartbreaking news that Mario Perez, Vice President for University Advancement, passed away this afternoon following a medical emergency.

I know this news will bring shock and profound sadness across our campus. The sudden loss of a leader, colleague, and member of our community is difficult to comprehend, and the grief will be felt in many different ways by those who knew him personally and by all who were touched by his presence and service.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Lori, their two daughters, his extended family, and to his many, many friends and colleagues, who are grieving with all of us in the Sonoma State community. We hold them closely in our thoughts and hearts during this painful time.

More information will be made available in the coming days. In the meantime, I urge every member of the Sonoma State community to take care of themselves and to lean on one another as we remember a valued friend and colleague. May we care for one another with compassion, patience, and grace as we grieve together.
