Campus-wide Power and Water Shutdown - December 29-31, 2025

Monday, December 8, 2025, 9:31am

TO: Campus Community
FR: J. Dana Twedell, Associate Vice President for Facilities Management

All campus buildings will be closed December 29-31. Electrical power to all Sonoma State University campus buildings will be shut off to address critical electrical related work. In addition to the electrical power being off, we will also be shutting off campus water for preventative maintenance repairs. During this schedule, all campus buildings will be closed and restricted from access. As in previous events,  we will be using generators for essential and emergency services.

To prepare your office or campus residence for this campus closure please observe the following:

  • Equipment: Completely power down all equipment prior to leaving for winter break. Remember to turn off power to computer monitors as well. Please unplug power strips as extra precaution.
  • Power Supply: Turn off uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) as the batteries will only carry the loads for a brief period before they are depleted.
  • Refrigerator/Freezer: Remove perishable items. During the power outage, refrigerators and freezers will defrost when they reach ambient temperature. Take perishables home and consider turning off refrigeration equipment a few days prior so any water can be cleaned up to prevent any issue upon your return from the holiday closure.
  • Security: Lock doors and secure confidential documents.
  • Trash & Recycling: Please take all perishable waste items to the nearest kitchen/pantry for disposal. Trash and recycling will not be picked up from individual offices prior to the Winter Break.

Campus Housing Residents: Please follow the instructions and deadlines provided to you by the Residential Education and Campus Housing (REACH) staff.  The information provided to you contains details about leaving for winter break and preparing for the planned power shutdown.

Please contact Facilities Management at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.
