The Sonoma State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents an evening of musical collaborations with President Judy K. Sakaki as guest narrator in Aaron Copland's iconic "Lincoln Portrait." The concert is Friday, Oct. 14, 7:30 p.m. in Weill Hall at the Green Music Center. Tickets are $8 for general admission and free to Sonoma State Students with promo code SSUStudent.
"The Lincoln Portrait," written in 1942, was originally composed to inspire World War II troops. Over the years, it has since been used as a way to inspire and create hope using Lincoln's most powerful speeches. Dignitaries from around the world have narrated Lincoln's Portrait, including President Obama and Margaret Thatcher. For this performance, Dr. Sakaki will read excerpts from Lincoln's writings, including the Gettysburg Address.
The program will also include a performance of John Krance's masterful adaption of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" by the Chabot Wind Symphony under the direction of Timothy Harris. The Sonoma State University Wind Ensemble will also perform Spanish composer Oscar Navarro's "Downey Overture," Ron Nelson's "Rocky Point Holiday," and Percy Grainger's "Colonial Song."
