Sonoma State University sports update, November 16-22. Women's Basketball continues to dominate with an undefeated record; men's basketball continues win streak; women's volleyball season ends in the second round of the CCAA tournament while Andrews, Papale and Seda make All-CCAA Volleyball Team.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Seawolves Cruise; Golden Named MVP of Logsdon Classic
Jimmy Golden went for a game-high 17 points and corralled eight rebounds while Jordan Fleck and Ronnie Harris came off the bench to score in double-figures as the Sonoma State men's basketball team earned a 64-53 victory over Academy of Art on Nov. 19 to wrap up the 16th Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic at The Wolves' Den in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves have won three straight games, improving to 3-1 this season.
Golden was named the Ron Logsdon Classic Most Valuable Player after leading Sonoma State with 15.0 points per game, scoring 20 of his 30 points from the free throw line. He was 20 for 23 from the free throw line, an 87.0 percent clip, to go along with a 5 for 15 effort from the floor. The La Habra native also grabbed 10 rebounds in the two games.
Explosive Second Half Propels Seawolves Past Saints
Trailing by six points at the half, the Sonoma State men's basketball team exploded for 51 points in the second half, holding a sharpshooting Saint Martin's squad to just 28 points, including 8 of 27 from the floor and 4 of 19 from three-point range in the final 20 minutes to score a 77-60 victory in front of an electric crowd at the Wolves' Den on Nov. 18.
Mason Phillips scored a team-high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting, including 3 for 5 from the three-point line. Jimmy Golden added 13 points, nine of which came from the free throw line. Ronnie Harris chipped in with 12 and Armani Nicolis had nine.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Seawolves Continue Winning Streak, Sail Past Western Oregon
The Seawolves continue their undefeated season at 4-0 by topping the Western Oregon University Wolves 74-59 Nov. 19 at the Carl's Junior Coslet Classic hosted by Chico State. This is the best start for the program since the 2007-08 season.
The Seawolves shot an impressive 92 percent from the free throw line (23-25) and 40 percent from the field. Kylie Kiech had the team high of 19 points, Madison Burroughs had 16. Kim Savio had eight points and team-high eight rebounds.
Offense Continues to Impress as Sonoma Runs by Dixie State
Kim Savio went 11 for 13 from the floor and scored a game high of 23 points to boost the Seawolves (3-0) to an 82-58 victory over Dixie State on Nov. 18 in Acker Gym.
This is the third straight game the Seawolves have scored over 80 points. The last time Sonoma State accomplished this feat was in the 1991 season. Contributing to the Seawolf win was Kylie Kiech with 11 points and a team-high six assists. Jessica Mitz chipped in 10 points and four assists. Madison Burroughs had a game-high four steals in addition to eight points and four rebounds.
VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball Season Ends in Semifinals of CCAA Tournament
Sonoma State fell to Cal State San Bernardino in the semifinal round of the CCAA tournament in four sets and end their season with a 15-12 record. Ashleigh Phelps had a career and team season high of 28 digs, and also lead the team with three aces. Megan Bohorquez tallied 13 digs on the night and Alexandra Flores contributed seven.
Seawolves Top Cal State LA Golden Eagles in CCAA Tournament
Sonoma State defeated Cal State LA in four sets to advance to one of the semifinal matches of the CCAA tournament. The Seawolves' record improves to 12-6 in the CCAA and 15-11 overall. Kelsey McIntire led the team with 14 points, 12 kills on a .409 hitting percentage and three blocks. Olivia Schonewise followed with 11.5 total points, 11 kills and two blocks.
Andrews, Papale, Seda Earn All-CCAA Volleyball Honors
Three Sonoma State Seawolf volleyball players earned All-CCAA honors. Senior middle blocker Rachel Andrews was named First Team All-CCAA, and both senior outside hitter Emily Papale and junior setter Courtney Seda were named Second Team All-CCAA.
Andrews has been a consistent leader in the CCAA in blocks and hitting parentage this season. She boasts a .399 hitting percentage in conference play and leads the CCAA. She ranks third in the CCAA in total blocks and with 69, 10 of which are solo, and fifth in blocks per set with 1.03. The Merced native had a notable game against Humboldt State on Oct. 14 this season, where she earned 19.5 total points with 15 kills on a .536 hitting percentage and seven blocks.
