Sonoma State mourns loss of national championship soccer coach Peter Reynaud

Sonoma State University is mourning the loss of Peter Reynaud, a Hall of Fame soccer coach who led the women’s soccer team to an NCAA championship. He died in 2026 at 82.

Reynaud was one of the most successful coaches in program history, leading the SSU women’s soccer team to five consecutive NCAC titles and five straight NCAA postseason appearances in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Under his leadership, the 1990 team captured the NCAA Division II national championship, the first NCAA title in Sonoma State history. That team was later inducted into the Sonoma State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001.

In his 12-year tenure with the women's squad, Reynaud compiled a 146-57-15 record while coaching 12 All-Americans. He also simultaneously coached the men's team until 1991.

Reynaud was known for his leadership and commitment to student-athlete development, leaving a lasting impact on generations of SSU athletes.

He later founded the women’s soccer program at Fresno State, and coached at Long Beach State during a decades-long career.

Sonoma State extends sincere condolences to Reynaud’s family and all who were impacted by his life and career.
