Chronicle of Higher Education: 'Sonoma State's Rally'
The Chronicle of Higher Education focused on the planned launch of Sonoma State athletics in fall 2027, as well as the university’s enrollment efforts, in “Sonoma State’s Rally,” an article in the September 2 edition of the publication.
In the article, university leaders including President Michael E. Spagna, Ed Mills (Strategic Enrollment), Robert Eyler (Advancement), and Joan McDermott (Athletics) shared their optimism about SSU’s future and how a new approach to athletics is emblematic of how the university is “reimagining” its operations through innovation and long-term strategies.

“As far as university leaders know, no other athletics program has been reinstated just two years after its elimination. Being an anomaly, though, seems to be part of the appeal for Sonoma State, whose administrators were insistent that they have a “good story to tell” — to the NCAA, to students, and the local community — about what happened, and how they plan to come back.
“Ask (Ed) Mills about Sonoma State’s outlook, and he’ll sound relentlessly bullish, if a little over the top. ‘This is going to be one of the most amazing comeback stories that higher ed in the U.S. has seen,’ he said.”
