Free Concerts to Boost Holiday Spirit

Stop by Sonoma State University on most any late-autumn day and you will find a music department concert about to happen. Choose from classical guitar, chamber winds, string orchestra, music theatre scenes, jazz and more! Performances are open to the public and free unless otherwise noted.

The schedule includes: 
An Evening of Classical Guitar - Mellow out to soothing solos for classical guitar, ending with the guitar ensemble strumming together under the direction of Eric Cabalo, Friday, Dec. 2, 7:30 p.m., GMC 1028.

Havana - Big Band meets the sounds of the Caribbean in this jazz series closer. Doug Leibinger and Kendrick Freeman lead the SSU Jazz Orchestra and Latin Band on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Warren Auditorium.

Harmoniemusik - Mozart's Serenade No. 11 - an octet for oboes, clarinets, horns and bassoons - and Robert Spittal's playful Consort for Ten Winds headline this program of chamber music exclusively for wind instruments. Led by Andy Collinsworth on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2 p.m. in GMC 1028.

Perfect Fifths - Coached by veteran San Francisco Opera Orchestra cellist Judiyaba, the SSU String Orchestra celebrates its third season with music by Jean Baptiste Lully - master of the French Baroque, and Hungarian composer and folklorist Bela Bartok, on Monday, Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m., GMC 1028.

Harmonious Microcosm - Experience the intimate and infinite world of chamber music performed by instrumental music majors and talented members of the musical community. Coaches include piano professor Marilyn Thompson and studio faculty Roy Zajac and Judiyaba. Four free performances in GMC 1028 at:

Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Saturday, Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m.

Lights, Camera, Interaction! - Experience a new Music Theatre revue entitled "Not Another Teen Musical." Music and theatre students collaborate to create a staged, lighted and costumed production using existing well-loved songs. Directed by Lynne Morrow. Thursday, Dec. 8, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 10, 2 p.m. in Warren Auditorium.

Viva voce! - Working under the leadership of SSU's outstanding voice faculty, voice students perform solos and duets accompanied by professional coaches. Friday, Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2 p.m. in Warren Auditorium.
