Campus Water Restrictions Now Lifted

April 8, 2019

Campus Updates:

April 10, 2019 - 5:25 p.m.

Sonoma State’s water has passed the second round of testing. As a result, state water officials have given the university clearance to cancel the Boil Water notice that has been in effect since Monday. The water on campus is safe to consume.

It is not unusual for water to temporarily have a cloudy appearance following a loss in pressure. Anyone concerned about the condition or appearance of water should contact Facilities Management at 707-664-2317 or submit a work order on the Facilities Management website.

Culinary Services will be bringing systems back online for the remainder of the day, and there may be some delays in regular service. Additionally, water filling stations and drinking fountains will be inspected and brought back online by Facility Services over the next 24 hours. Stations that have signs posted should not be used until the sign has been removed.

We appreciate the patience of all students, faculty and staff during this time.

April 10, 2019 - 9:15 a.m.

Water officials have informed Sonoma State that the university’s water has passed the first round of tests. But the Boil Water notice will remain in effect until a second round of testing is completed, which we have been advised will likely occur later today. As a result, we continue to recommend those on campus use bottled water or boiled tap water for drinking and cooking purposes.

Bottled water will continue to be made available for all students, faculty and staff at the following locations:

•        The REACH office at Zinfandel Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

•        The key kiosk room at Zinfandel – 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

•        The Student Center – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As previously noted, out of an abundance of caution, we recommend using tap water to wash hands with soap and suggest that you use hand sanitizer before handling food or putting your hands to your mouth, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We also recommend using bottled water for the brushing of teeth. These and other guidelines are available on the Frequently Asked Questions page that is posted on the SSU News website. If you have questions, contact Environmental Health and Safety on campus at (707) 664-3583.

April 9, 2019 - 3:44 p.m.

Sonoma State University remains under a Boil Water restriction until further notice. The water on campus has been tested, and samples have been sent to state Water Resources Control Board officials. We continue to advise those on campus to use bottled water or boiled tap water for drinking and cooking purposes until we receive the test results. We will communicate with the campus community as soon as we receive clearance to lift the notice.

In the meantime, bottled water continues to be made available for all students, faculty and staff at the following locations:

•        The REACH office at Zinfandel Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

•        The Key kiosk room at Zinfandel – 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

•        The Student Center – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As previously noted, we recommend using tap water to wash hands with soap and suggest that you use hand sanitizer before handling food or putting your hands to your mouth. We also recommend using bottled water for the brushing of teeth. These and other guidelines are available on the Frequently Asked Questions page that is posted on the SSU News website. If you have questions, contact Environmental Health and Safety on campus at (707) 664-3583.

April 8, 2019 - 2:40 p.m.

Representatives from Sonoma County Department of Health Services are on campus assisting the university in addressing our current water situation. We will not be able to lift the notice until the water lines are tested and the results come back, which could take up to 48 hours. We will notify everyone as soon as we receive clearance to lift the notice.

Until then, the university is required to advise those on campus to use bottled water or boiled tap water for drinking and cooking purposes. When possible, individuals are encouraged to bring water from home. As noted previously, this notice is being sent out of an abundance of caution, as required by the state Water Resources Control Board.

In the meantime, more bottled water is being delivered and will be made available for all students, faculty and staff.

The bottled water distribution points are as follows:

•        REACH office at Zinfandel Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

•        Key kiosk room at Zinfandel – 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

•        Student Center – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

We recommend using tap water to wash hands with soap, and we recommend that you use hand sanitizer. An FAQ page has been created to answer these and other questions. This can be found on the SSU News website. If you have questions, contact Environmental Health and Safety on campus at (707) 664-3583.

April 8, 2019 - 11 a.m.

Due to an unanticipated drop in water pressure in our well-fed water system, Facilities Management is required to advise those on campus to use bottled water or boiled tap water for drinking and cooking purposes. This notice is being sent out of an abundance of caution, as required by the state Water Resources Control Board.

Bottled water will be made available for all students, faculty and staff. We will inform you when tests show that the water is safe and you no longer need to drink bottled or boiled water.

The bottled water distribution points will be as follows:

•        REACH office at Zinfandel Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

•        Key kiosk room at Zinfandel – 11 p.m. to 8 a.m.

•        Student Center – 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bottled water has already been distributed to the Student Health Center and the Children’s School. Culinary Services has been notified and is taking appropriate precautionary procedures.

If you have any questions, contact Environmental Health and Safety on campus at (707) 664-3583.
