Students from AIMS College Prep High School (AIMS HS) in Oakland will be assured spots at Sonoma State thanks to a guaranteed admissions agreement between their school’s board and the university.
Serving students in Oakland, AIMS HS has received national recognition for its academic excellence, ranking in the top 8% of high schools in California and the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2024. AIMS K-12 College Prep Charter District focuses on closing the opportunity gap for socioeconomically disadvantaged students, who represent a majority of its student body.
“The AIMS-Sonoma State partnership is a game-changer, giving our students direct access to college without the usual barriers,” said Jose Kabeer, AIMS K-12 College Bound Coordinator.
“I am very excited about our new partnership with AIMS. Working together, we will help many students achieve their educational goals,” said Ed Mills, SSU Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Management.
Since its founding in 2006, AIMS HS has maintained a 100% acceptance rate to four-year colleges and universities. The school attributes its success to a comprehensive approach that includes a strong STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) curriculum, emphasis on attendance, coverage of student AP exam and college application fees, and foundational support of staff and family.
“We're proud to offer this chance to Oakland’s most deserving young minds who want the full college experience but need to stay close to home. This partnership is all about creating opportunities, lifting up our community, and showing our students they are valued and wanted,” Kabeer said.
